R.U.R. - ROSSUM’S UNIVERSAL ROBOTS - June 18 - July 10, 2010

This show is a new adaptation of Karel Capek's prophetic 1921 play that gave birth to modern sci-fi and introduced the word "robot" to the world's lexicon.

At its island factory, Rossum's Universal Robots makes the cheapest, strongest labor force you can find; the best bio-mechanical robots for your every need. They're so good, they even look human! But when a beautiful young revolutionary arrives with notions of robot liberation, she is greeted by R.U.R.'s managers who assure her that robots are soulless and indifferent to humanity's cause. However, her idealistic views plant the seeds of a revolution that proves just how dangerously human robots can be.

Cast Blog Online Now! "THE HAPPY COUPLE"

The cast, director and playwright for The Happy Couple are posting a blog about their experience in working on a world premiere play. As director Matthew Byron Cassi noted, it's like getting the DVD Special Features of a live play...before you see it! The blog can be found at http://jamesvenhaus.net/wordpress/

Also, Deborah Martin of the San Antonio Express-News is writing a weekly blog about the creation of a new, two-act drama and what each member of the creative team brings to the process.

Both Deborah's blog and the cast/crew blogs are entertaining and instructive, as you can see how the playwright uses the rehearsals to guide script revisions, and the director works with the actors to create believable characters and bring the script from the page to the stage.

You can read Deborah's weekly take on the "Art Beat" blog at http://blogs.mysanantonio.com/weblogs/artbeat/.

Deborah's first 2 blog entries on the show are:

Saturday, April 3, 8pm: As part of its Artist Spotlight Series, the Overtime will present the full-length version of "Variations..." as well as other works by Edward Wise

A shorter version of the comedy played in four separate chapters during "The Ides of Texas" playfest, and its absurdist, anarchist comedy won over the audiences night after night. Now "Variations..." will play in its full, unexpurgated glory on the first Saturday in April.

But enough of glossy, press-release pap. Here, the artist justifies his tawdry existence to an aggressive media-bot:

REPORTER

I heard rumors that more variations had been written for the show but they were cut from the final production. Is that true?

EDWARD

For that to be true, that means I would have had to have written material that wasn’t good enough for the final show. Does that sound like me?

REPORTER

You've got a point.

EDWARD

I sure do. In reality, during the rehearsal process, the other actors came to me with ideas for another series of Variations. I reworked some of the ideas so that they were no longer shitty and the result is what we have for you today. Variations on Variations: Those that Didn't Make the Cut!

An Artist's One-Sentence Bio: Edward Wise has been working in the theatre community of San Antonio for over 10 yrs. But he's been badass a lot longer than that!

A Properly Traditional Bio: Edward Wise began working in the theatre in 1998 while attending Palo Alto College in San Antonio, TX. He transferred to San Marcos, TX where he received his BFA in Theatre from Texas State University in 2002. He has since filled his time working in all aspects of the theatre. This is his first play produced at the Overtime Theater.

Dates: April 3

Showtimes: 8pm Saturday.

Tickets: $12 general admission and $9 for teachers, students, SATCO members, active military and seniors 65+. Make reservations or buy tickets at www.theovertimetheater.net!

SOB CHOKE LOVE 3D! - February 12-27, 2010

The Overtime presents its annual onstage homage to comic-book romance. Adapted from actual romance comics from the 1960's and early '70's, Sob Choke LOVE 3D! will stage live versions of these classic, sappy stories in their full glory.

The stories are acted out verbatim, comic book panel by panel, with all of the dialogue that scintillated then and disturbs now.

The past two incarnations of Sob Choke LOVE have been called one of the "best shows of 2008" (Express-News) and "strange and hilarious" (UTSA Paisano).

Sob Choke Love! 3D! opens on Friday, February 12, 2010 and runs every weekend until Saturday, February 27.

This year, Sob Choke LOVE 3D! will include a few short stories and one long romance told, Rashomon-style, from three different perspectives.

The three stories presented in the new installment are:

  • "Next Door to Love (Part Two - The Searing Conclusion)"
  • "The Girl Voted Most Likely to Succeed"
  • "Love Stop!"

In 2008, Co-Director Kathleen Lovejoy helped to direct the first version of the romance comics-on-stage production. "When I helped John Poole with the first Sob Choke Love!, I thought his idea of bringing comic books to life was great!" said Lovejoy. "I feel very privileged to be part of the series once again, especially since we're bringing a little 3-D into the love life of the early 70's. Just remember that the scenes depicted are a true representation of life back then (personal experience). My, how times have changed."

Co-Director and cast member Sophie Bolles noted that this year's Sob Choke Love! 3D! is different in several respects from the past two years: "Since we're doing these stories 40 years after their publishing date, it's turning into a celebration of the last two years of Sob Choke Love!, the year 1970, and the new things we can do with comic books on stage."

Directed by Kathleen Lovejoy and Sophie Bolles.

The cast includes:

  • Matthew Arch
  • Sophie Bolles
  • Lilly Canaria
  • Cary Farrow
  • Matthew Sinclair
  • Theresa Ronquillo
  • Lucy Villanueva

Dates: February 12-14, 19-21 and 26-27.

Showtimes: 8 pm Fridays-Saturdays. Two Sunday shows are scheduled for Feb. 14 (a special 8 pm Valentine's Day Show) and Feb. 21 (3 pm).

The special Feb. 14 Valentine’s Day show will also feature a champagne and chocolate reception.

Tickets: Tickets are $12 general admission and $9 for teachers, students with current ID, seniors 65+, and SATCO members.

Feb.14 Valentine's Day Show: $30/couple or $15/single for the show and reception.

Saturday, February 6, 8:30pm: The 1st OT Emerging Artist Spotlight – BRAD MILNE: "On the Edge"

For our first OTEAS showcase, the Overtime presents Brad Milne, an actor who formerly lived in San Antonio but moved to L.A. a few years ago.

Milne is back in San Antonio for a few months, and the OT is giving those who remember his stellar theatre work here (The Hairy Ape, The Laramie Project, Angels in America, Dark Horse Pale Rider) the chance to see Milne in action once again in his showcase, "On the Edge."

The show begins at 8:30 pm and will feature some film clips from Brad's L.A. work and three live scenes from different projects: Izzy Legit: Putz to Player, created and written by Brad and Andrew Giannetta, and two scenes from material he is working on with writer Roy Eisenstein.

The scenes focus on "awkward, offbeat characters" such as Izzy Legit, a Hollywood scam artist/producer, Milne said. Other local actors, including Rob Barron, Amanda Bianchi, James Hartz, Aisha Minor and Liz Vermeulen, will join Milne onstage for these scenes.

"On the Edge" combines elements of three comedic storylines presented as short plays. The first piece, Izzy Legit: Putz to Player, introduces Izzy, an up-and-coming Hollywood producer who’s going to teach the world just how simple show biz can be. Up second is Camus, a one-act adapted from a feature length screenplay. This story follows the journey of a man whose life has been wrecked and is now on a mission to scatter his deceased dog's ashes in Death Valley. "On The Edge" closes with It's Them, a comedic and oh-so-reasonably racist sermon elucidating the difficulties in America and their root cause. The Izzy Legit piece combines elements of film clips and live action. Other film clips of Mine's work will be sprinkled in show transitions.

BRAD MILNE BIOGRAPHY:

Brad Milne recently played Rod West in "The Rediculous Department," a TV comedy pilot.

He is also known for horror genre roles as: Dr. Chushfeld, in Sony's "Zombie Strippers" and greedy real estate agent Carl Stevens in Lionsgate's multi award-winning "The Slaughter."

Brad began acting in Toronto where he studied intensively with a variety of top U.S. and Canadian coaches for five years. During the early years he worked consistently doing independent feature films, TV episodics, commercials, and industrials. Later he moved to Texas where he landed critically acclaimed leading theatre roles in "Dinner With Friends," (Gabe) receiving the ATAC Globe Award for Excellence - Lead Actor Drama, "The Hairy Ape" (Yank), "Angels In America" (Louis), "Dark Horse Pale Rider" (Cristobal), "Of Mice & Men" (George), and "The Laramie Project" (multiple characters), receiving the ATAC Globe Award for Excellence - Best Production Drama. In Texas he also worked on TV projects, commercials, and as an acting coach with a client base of more than 200 students.

Brad moved to Los Angeles in 2005 and has worked consistently, acting in over 50 projects including feature length and short films, television, internet and corporate. He is also co-founder of Branded Raw Films and creator/producer of "Izzy Legit" and "The Extermutator."
